My stay with Claudio was the perfect place for my start of my first ever trip to beautiful Italy! It was just as I pictured it. I liked the fact that it was outside of Florence and I could come back from a long day of touring the city and really relax and enjoy the beautiful peacefulness of the small town of Al Girone. There is a wonderful local restaurant right by the bus stop and I found taking the bus back and forth to Florence very easy. Claudio will give you a bus schedule that is very helpful. He also has bikes that are free to take a lovely ride into Florence along the Arno river. Just might want to bring some biking shorts along cause the ride is a little bumpy on the path even though it is pretty flat and easy to ride!! Claudio served a more than generous breakfast spread every morning. His friendly dog Emilio was a joy to have around also. I definitely recommend you stay at this quaint bed and breakfast!

Our 4 night stay at La Martellina was very much the highlight of the trip. Claudio is a wonderful host, and his dog, Emilio, is thoroughly adorable.

The surroundings and the building itself are every bit as beautiful as the pictures depict. And waking up to the sound of the river Arno is an experience in itself.

Claudio also spares no effort in the preparation of his breakfasts. Knowing that Asians like to have rice, he specially cooked some for us every morning. He even made pancakes for some of the other American guests. We found it hard to leave the breakfast table every morning, and starting your day early in Florence is a challenge. But that's a happy problem.

In all, I recommend La Martellina if you are looking to have some experience of living in the Italian countryside and do not mind making the 25 minute bus journey into the town centre.

Dear Claudio,

Norman and Lois CarrLois and I have many fond memories of Croatia and Italy. Among our fondest memories are La Martellina and your wonderful hospitality. You seemed like an old friend from the moment we met you at the train station. Our nights in Girone helped make the days in Firenze much more bearable, and La Martellina was the perfect end to our trip.

We send this small gift to provide you with a little piece of United States heritage. We purchased it at our local center for Native Americans. It is handmade by a Cherokee Indian. The material is sweet grass and pine needles. Remember your friends in faraway Kansas when you look at it.

Thank you again for a wonderful experience on the Arno.

Until we meet again,
Norman and Lois Carr
