Balmain , Australia
Description of the space proposed to travellers:
We are Pamela and Stephen and we live by the harbour with our two kids, aged 10 and 12 - we are offering you a unique budget stay with a friendly and well-traveled family. We have been living in London for 15 years and we're now back home, to find Sydney is a world class city - but expensive for visitors. We can help you with all the cost saving tricks and advice to ensure you have a great stay!
We can host up to 6 people or just a single traveler.
Please contact us if you are in a group over 3 people in order to check availability and the price.
Pamela loves cooking, having owned a cafe in the past and is working as a lecturer in film, a freelance writer and food reviewer. She is also opening a new cafe and Gallery in the new year which is very exciting for us.
We are happy to include guests in our evening meals (at an extra cost of $25 per person for 2 courses) excluding alcohol, bring ypur own bottle like the Australians do! Or you can choose from a variety of fantastic restaurants within a short walking distance from the house. We can cater to all tastes and can provide, gluten free, vegetarian or vegan meals on request. Or we can even provide you with a picnic basket to take down to the little park next door by the harbours edge and you can watch the sunset.
We do provide a complimentary self serve breakfast of cereal, toast, fruit, coffee, tea, and juice.
There is an old fashioned bathroom with a toilet that is shared with us, but there are also 2 other toilets in the building so there are plenty of facilities.
All our bedrooms come with a gorgeous view of the water, as wea re in a most amazing position at the end of the road, looking out over the boats and the twinkling lights of the harbour at night. We are not a luxury pad, our house is a character house - renovated and homely, just the way we love it! So if you like hard lines and designer architectural minimalism this is not the place for you! We revel in boho chic and offer a friendly and attentive stay because we love hosting and meeting people from all cultures and all walks of life. We also hosted for Air bnb in London with over a hundred guests and remember each and every one!
There is no TV, maybe we will get one....but there are too many fun things to do instead! And of course we respect your privacy and welcome independent travelers.
We are just a few minutes walk from the Balmain ferry which takes you to Circular Quay, Cockatoo Island, North Sydney and Darling Harbor in minutes. Walk out the back door of our garden and you will find a hidden park with a tiny beach and wharf. (please look at the photos for a glimpse) The house is by Sydney harbour which is a working one with boat wrights and ferries.
Transport wise we are in a fantastic position. We are only a short walk to buses and a trip to the CBD takes about 15 - 25 minutes depending on the time of day. It's also easy to get to Central Station where you can catch a train to the Blue Mountains. So we are perfectly placed to get to just about anywhere you need to go.
I may also be able to pick you up in my car from the airport if I am available for $25 (one person) and $50 for up to 4 people. This needs to be arranged via email once you have booked, giving flight numbers and times so we can arrange a pick up point in the airport.
The suburb of Balmain has a villagey feeling and is one of Sydney's safest neighbourhoods. Families and singles will feel perfectly happy any time of day walking around the area.
On Saturdays there is a craft market at the top of our street and Rozelle Market (vintage) is further down the main street and well worth a visit for a bit of local colour. Or if gourmet food is your thing there's a popular market with organic produce in nearby Lilyfield (Orange Grove Market.)
Our location is perfect, with gorgeous waterside walks and historical architecture all only a few steps from our door.
Balmain is a historic district, yet not a tourist trap, and it's great to explore on foot with harbourside parks, quirky architecture, and numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants.
At every turn, you'll catch magnificent views of the sparkling blue waters of beautiful Sydney harbour and its world-famous Harbour Bridge. It is busy on the main street yet delightfully peaceful in the many winding hilly roads.
There is plenty to do. You can kayak on the harbour, go fishing, take a ferry ride all around the harbour to places like Luna Park, the Northshore, Crircular Quay, Darling Harbour and Cockatoo Island and there are lots of birds to watch.
We have seen owls around our house and there are laughing kookaburras and colourful parakeets all year round.
In nearby Mort Bay, there is a kids playground and free barbecue grills at Ballast Point for you to use as the sun sets. Ballast Point is an interesting parkland with industrial sculptures and maritime views of Sydney's working harbour You can play boules with locals on some evenings. There are pubs within a few minutes walk which have jazz and quiz nights as well as two lawn bowling clubs where you can have a delicious dinner, drink and play barefoot lawn bowls - a popular game with families.
Just ask us and we'll be delighted to give you all the insider tips about our own neighbourhood and the rest of Sydney too!
After November we are only able to book one month ahead as our plans are unsure with so many [projects coming up, so if you see we are unavailable during dates at Christmas and beyond please contact us again closer to the time and we can see if we can make room for you.
